On July 3rd, the guys at Lakeside Skimboards what looks like was a sweet event in Seattle, Washington.

Sponsored riders from both WA and BC showed up, with names like Blake Zimmerman and John Minns throwing bangers on the multiple set-ups.

The Jam was judged in a “best trick” format and congrats go out to DB team rider Blake Zimmerman for taking home the win with a front big- boardslide, 270 out on the dragon tail box.

Props to Marty Ferguson for putting this event together, we look forward to more like it.

Lon Porteous, Sam Price and myself made the twelve hour drive from Sacramento,CA to St.George,UT, leaving Thursday afternoon around 2:00P.M. and arriving in Utah around 2:00A.M. Friday morning. I just want to give a personal thank you Lon for being brave enough to put the rental car and hotel room on his credit card, THANKS LON!

Upon arrival at our amazing 2.5star (whoever gave it that good of rating on expedia needs to be shot) there was no one in the clerks office to assist us. After an estimated seven minutes of constant ringing on the doorbell, a 20-something year old gentlemen emerges from the back room with a look on his face like he was ready to kill whoever was their at HIS WORK trying to get the room THEY RESERVED.

After a brief two minute conversation, he informed us that our reservation did not exist, after choice words; we were able to land a room for the three nights we planned on staying in the beautiful town of St. George.

The next morning (after I my throw up streak started) Lon, Sam and myself headed down to the river to meet up with DB team riders Blake ZImmerman and Lexi Hutchings who had driven into town from San Diego the night before. After riding for several hours, We all headed back to the hotel to cool off by the pool and partake in some adult beverages.

On Saturday morning I opened my eyes to Lon yelling something towards the door, he was saying, “Do not disturb”. Whoever he was talking to, did not listen and continued to knock. Lon opened the door and it was our good friend from the front desk, he informed us at 8:30AM on a Saturday, that we had to move our car so they could cut their palm trees, more great service.

At this point it had been 24hours since I had eaten anything and I had probably thrown up at least ten times. We eventually made our way down to the beach right at 10AM when the comp was set to star, sat down with Blake, Lexi and fellow DB team riders Emile, Jason and J.R. who had come in from Washington late the previous evening; surveyed the situation and rode for a bit. 

The competition format was unclear from the time we got there, til’ the time the event ended. When all was said and done it was one-on-one heats of 2minutes each, with the final round being one-on-one and only 1minute long.

After what seemed endless amounts of one-on-one heats, in which, most riders were unsure of whether they were fighting to keep their spot or just riding another round; it would be told that Blake and Emile would set the stage for the final heat.

The two were killing it all day and it was a close one to call, but with time running out, Emile landed a huge 540shuv over the kink of the up down set-up and rode away with style; sealing the victory. He would then receive a $40 Itunes gift card for driving 18hours and winning 1st place in the Advanced division of what is know as one of the MAJOR FLATLAND COMPS.

In the Women’s Division, it was local product Lexi Hutchings once again taking the win.

Over in the U-18 division, St.George’s own Devin Staag took the victory.

After the comp ended, everyone stuck around and rode for two hours or so. With me still unable to eat or stop throwing up, and our New Zealand friend dying from the Southern Utah heat, we decided to head back to the hotel to rest for a while.

Around 6PM, we ventured back down to the river to skim and film with the DB crew again, this time lasting only a hour before the heat got to Sam and my SARS took it’s toll.

That night would be the deciding factor of the trip. With plans to leave St.George in the morning and head to Vegas to party, we hung low at the hotel, already having little to no energy; but by 4:00AM; with me in the bathroom throwing my guts up for the 30th time, it became apparent to Lon and Sam that it was time to make the dreaded twelve hour drive back to Sacramento so I could get some medical attention. (Thanks again guys!)

The next twelve hours were similar to the rest of the trip, it was hot, the drive was long and I felt like shit. All in all I still think we enjoyed ourselves…

I can’t say I was that let down, although the comp was a joke in my eyes, I didn’t expect much more than the previous three trips I had made to St. George; and just like the last three, it was more about riding and hanging out with friends from all around North America who made the trek out.

Our friends over at the Victorian Skim Society in Australia released their video from the January 11th competiton today. Video is full with plenty of bails as well as bangers; including a huge bs bigspin off of launch ramp at 1:40. Shout out to Matt Peters for putting the edit together.
